It was a beautiful day for a tow and all was well in Calm Channel but after an hour I noticed the Snipe was riding low. I stopped and she was obviously full of water. It was forced in through the centerboard slot from the speed of the tow. I gave a tug on the tow line and she did a lazy roll upside down. In some distress, I called friend Doug George, boatbuilder and all round coastal genius, who lives on his self-built 60 foot sailboat in the Settler Islands in Surge narrows. His first words were the best I could have heard: "Remember, she's a wood boat. She won't sink." He arrived in 30 minutes in "Slicer", his self-built, sleek, super efficient 26 foot motorboat. In short order he was able to turn the Snipe over and bail her out. He stuffed rags in the top end of the centerboard slot to stop water from coming in. We adjusted the tow line (he gave me hell for using a non-floating one) and I started out, with Doug checking to see that all was now okay. It was. I went on my way and he on his. What can you say about a person who turns a bad day into a very good one? I arrived in Lund at 2PM after 5-1/2 hours under way.
